Hush, who’s real name is Thomas Elliot, is a major supervillains who debuted in 2003 by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. His debut issue was Batman #609 in the storyline named after him, which is a rare occurrence.
Considering how many new villains are created and barely seen again, Hush endured and become a major supervillain with great popularity and many recurring major story arcs.
Getting into Hush is rather easy, much of his appearances are included in a storyline that’s been collected – our reading orders aren’t including every issue that he is ever mentioned in but it does include the core appearances and in chronological order.
He doesn’t feature much in Batman New 52 or Rebirth (or at least, he doesn’t have a dedicated storyline).
There are 76 issues in total to get the best Hush experience.
Batman Hush Trade Reading Order
Contents
Hush
His first appearance and perhaps his greatest storyline, too. This storyline ran pre-Flashpoint in the regular Batman books, issues #608-#619. A marvellous, marvellous book and regularly in top 10 best Batman stories of all time.
- Loeb, Jeph (Author)
- English (Publication Language)
- 376 Pages - 09/17/2019 (Publication Date) - Dc Comics (Publisher)
Hush Returns
Hush returns unexpectedly and perhaps unnecessarily in the Hush Returns storyline from A.J. Lieberman’s Batman: Gotham Knights issues #50 to #55 and #66. Not the greatest story ever told but Hush as a character is further fleshed out, especially his motives.
Hush features quite a bit in Gotham Knights, but only Hush Returns has been collected, which is a shame. See the issue by issue reading order on which ones to get.

- 208 Pages - 09/23/2023 (Publication Date) - Titan Books Ltd (Publisher)
Heart of Hush
Hush returns…again! This time penned by Paul Dini and it’s a really good book if not a little wacky on the pseudo-science. Either way, easy to get in collected form through a trade. Collects Batman Detective Comics #846-#850.
- Paul Dini (Author)
- English (Publication Language)
- Titan Books Ltd (Publisher)
Hush Money
A direct follow up to Hush Returns by Paul Dini but this time in its own mini series Batman: Streets of Gotham. This is an interesting story as during this time Dick Grayson is Batman, Bruce is AWOL and Hush uses his Bruce Wayne lookalike appearance to defraud Wayne Enterprises. Hush Money being a term to ‘keep quiet’. Collects Detective Comics #852, Batman #685 and Streets of Gotham #1-#4.
- Used Book in Good Condition
- Dini, Paul (Author)
- English (Publication Language)
House of Hush
House of Hush is the final arc by Paul Dini for the Streets of Gotham series. His character and past are explored in the most amount of detail here so far. He is still impersonating Bruce Wayne but he grows tired of finally having what he thought he always wanted.
Collects Batman: Streets of Gotham #14-#21.
- Dini, Paul (Author)
- English (Publication Language)
- 189 Pages - 08/21/2012 (Publication Date) - Dc Comics (Publisher)
Eternal
Hush’s only significant appearance in the New 52 is in Eternal. His appearance begins in issue #26 and features more or less until the end. This is perhaps Hush’s biggest plan to date and includes a proper confrontation with Bruce Wayne unlike any that we’ve seen – this feels more like a sequel to the original than the Streets of Gotham stories.
Eternal features and all-star cast of writers including Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV.
- Hardcover Book
- Snyder, Scott (Author)
- English (Publication Language)
You are better off buying the Eternal omnibus rather than start in the midpoint just for Hush.
